Ecuador is situated directly on the equator, meaning we do not experience traditional four-season years. Instead, the coast goes through two distinct climatic periods. Understanding these is vital when deciding the best time to visit Mompiche.
The Two Seasons of Ecuador's Coast
Unlike other places where "wet season" means ruined vacations, Ecuador-s seasons are slightly counter-intuitive.
1. The "Wet" & Sunny Season (December - April)
Ironically, the wet season is actually the sunniest and hottest time to be on the coast.
- The Weather: The mornings are gloriously sunny, hot, and humid. Short, intense tropical downpours usually happen in the late afternoons or overnight, bringing the jungle to life.
- The Ocean: The water is comfortably warm (around 78-82-F / 25-28-C). You can surf in boardshorts or a bikini all day.
- The Surf (North Swells): This is the prime time for advanced surfers. Massive North Pacific swells roll down the coast, igniting Mompiche's legendary left point break. If you are here to get barreled, this is your window.
2. The "Dry" & Gar-a Season (May - November)
The dry season coincides with the arrival of the Humboldt Current, bringing cooler waters from Antarctica up the South American coast.
- The Weather: It rarely rains during this period, but a permanent coastal marine layer/fog known as the Gar-a hangs over the beach, making the days cooler and grayer.
- The Ocean: The water temperature drops significantly (down to 68-F / 20-C). You will absolutely want a spring suit or a 3/2mm wetsuit.
- The Surf (South Swells): While the heavy barrels of the North Point might not be firing as intensely, this season brings highly consistent, smaller swells. It is the absolute perfect time for beginners to learn how to surf on the softer beach breaks.
When is the Best Time for Whale Watching?
If you want to see the majestic Humpback Whales, you must align your trip with their annual migration from Antarctica to the warm equatorial waters to breed. The best viewing window is strictly between June and September.
